Wheel Chairs Disney

Is Disneyworld or Disneyland better with wheelchairs?

My in-laws were in town for New Year’s. We of course had a day planned to go to Epcot. I knew that if I went for an entire day to Epcot. From the sunup to sundown experience, I would be feeling off by the end of the day. We decided that for everyone’s enjoyment. For the first time in my life, we would wheel me around in a wheelchair. I have never personally been in a wheelchair in Disneyland, but I have been with friends who were in a wheelchair. I had never been to Disney World with anyone who was in a wheelchair. So, I did not know what to expect. We went on January 5th, 2024. Can I say it was the busiest I have ever seen Epcot? It was the first day since pass holders were blocked out for the Holidays that we could get back in. With it also being around a holiday and no school it was packed. To give you an example. We waited in line for Finding Nemo for 90 min. If you are a regular Disney World goer like me. You know that the wait time for this ride is usually 15 min. It was crazy! The entire day was like this. On the plus side. We got to see the New Moana Experience. It was finally open. It was body to body. But beautiful at being said I wish it was a ride, not a walk thru. So, I assumed that my experience in a wheelchair would be like the one I had in Disneyland. If the lines were wide enough, we would wait in line like normal people with my wheelchair. If they were small lines, then I would get to cut with my party in line. As you can imagine. With it being so busy. Even arriving at opening and staying until close. Were unable to see the entire park. It was my in-law’s first time going to Epcot, so we were hoping to see everything. Luckily, we live in Florida so we will have to go and visit another time with them. Yet, they loved it. Back to the topic at hand. We rented a wheelchair for $12 in Epcot. No deposit is necessary. I also did not need to prove that I needed the wheelchair with any type of medical paper. Can I just say that $12 is an amazing price for Disney?! As you enter Epcot you rent the wheelchair on the left side of the globe. Near the entrance. You can use it all day including walking to the car. You can also park-hop with the rental the entire day. I thought that was cool. The cost to rent a wheelchair in Disneyland is $15 with a $20 refundable deposit. So, price-wise wise Disney World is better. So, a win for Disney World! Unlike Disneyland however… You do not get to cut the line. You get to do this almost everywhere at Disneyland but at Disney World, you wait in line the entire time like normal people. Except for Spaceship Earth. As a party. We were able to skip the line. It was an older ride, and the lines were much too small for a wheelchair. So, if you want to cut the lines while in a wheelchair then I would recommend Disneyland. It’s not just you who gets to cut either. It’s your entire party. I did, however, miss being able to walk in the park. My heart goes out to those who need a wheelchair all the time. I felt like I was missing a lot. I mean I could take in some things, but other things were harder to see. The cast members were extremely kind to me. They went out of their way to make me feel special. Which was nice! Since I am not used to being in a wheelchair it was embarrassing. So, the extra care and attention were meaningful. Even going with friends in wheelchairs in Disneyland the cast members were also very kind. I really appreciate Disney’s extra care for those in these types of circumstances. Trying to push a wheelchair in such a crowded area as Epcot did have its challenges. People jump right in front of you all the time. It’s like you are invisible. I thought many times we were going to run someone over. We did bump into a few people and got angry looks. lol, I’m not sure why they think it stops automatically. Why are people so dumb? lol Waiting for shows like Luminous was nice because I had a portable seat and didn’t need to worry about that. So, if you are in a wheelchair this is a plus. My feet thanked me and so was my fibromyalgia. 🙂 Trying to get into the Grand Fiesta Tour in Disney World was the hardest part. Luckily, I was able to walk but we did have to park and walk inside. It was probably because of how incredibly busy they were and I can walk. If I couldn’t have walked they did a different way to get inside. It felt nice to stretch my legs though. So I wasn’t complaining. Being in a wheelchair at Disney’s Epcot went fine. I missed being able to walk. But if you do have a friend or relative who needs a wheelchair don’t let that discourage you from going. It is more than doable and a wonderful experience. update… My health is still not great. So for my daughter’s 13th birthday on 2/9/2024, we went to Hollywood Studios for the entire day. Once again found myself in a wheelchair. Just like Epcot. You can rent them on the right side near the entrance! Of course, they are good for the entire day and for park hopping. Like a goof, I asked if we take it with us to the next park. They just smiled and said “No” you pick up a new one at the next park. lol My family was teasing me about strapping it to the car. lol Hollywood Studios is by far my teenager’s favorite park. Whenever they get to choose, we find ourselves at Hollywood Studios. They LOVE it! It has a ton of cool thrill rides. Being in a wheelchair was the same experience as Epcot and Hollywood. Once again, the cast members were very nice and wanted to make sure I could walk onto the rides. If you are unable to walk onto the rides, they do have an option for that as well. So do not fret. Disney is amazing at thinking about all types of guests. When you arrive at a ride. Make sure to go up to the cast member at the entrance. They will let you know the wheelchair rules for that ride and go over everything with you. If you find yourself or a loved one needing a wheelchair at any Disney Park. Don’t let it keep you from going to the park. You’ll still have just a magical time. So, the question is which is better for a wheelchair? Disneyland or Disney World. To answer that question, it is a tie. Both offer a wonderful day at Disney with your guests. Disneyland does have a few more ride perks but overall both are great.
